How to Prepare for Hydroseeding

IMPORTANT: Please note that we do not provide ground preparation services. It is up to the client to prepare the designated area for seeding. Failure to properly prepare ground beforehand can (and usually will) result in dismal grass growth.

To give grass seed the best chance to grow, it is highly recommended that customers apply topsoil to their desired hydroseeding location. Once topsoil has been placed, it must be raked for weeds, sticks, rocks and other obstructions that can hamper grass growth. Topsoil must also preferably be spread evenly and flat.

The image below is an example of properly prepared topsoil:

If topsoil is not an option, it is still recommended that you remove obstructions from the seeding site, but grass may take longer to grow and grow evenly.

Post-seeding Care

Once hydroseeding has been done, it must be watered at least once a day (twice daily if weather is hot and dry). Seed must be kept damp, but without over-watering. If you start to create puddles while watering, you are watering too much. This can kill the seed and result in your lawn looking "spotty" (bald areas without grass).

Ideally, you should refrain from walking on your lawn for at least two weeks after seeding. This goes for pets as well, as dogs will tend to destroy the seed before it has a chance to germinate. If you must traverse your lawn, do so as gingerly as possible.

If the instructions above are followed, grass should start growing after about two weeks. Enjoy your new lawn!
